An Open Letter to Michelle Obama: Let’s (Still) Move!

CoreBanner_OpenLetterToMichelle.pngDear Mrs. Obama,

In the words of the iconic 90’s boy band, Boyz II Men, “It’s so hard to say goodbye…”  But that’s not the main reason for my letter (I prefer “see ya later”).  I’m actually writing in hopes that we won’t have to say goodbye to your Let’s Move initiative and all of the good work that your passion project has accomplished over your past two terms as our nation’s First Lady.

We in the fresh produce industry proudly support your efforts, specifically focusing our time, energy and charitable giving to promote the Let’s Move Salad Bars to Schools campaign, a passion project of our own. Through organizations like the United Fresh Start Foundation,  influencers like The Produce Mom, and programs such as the Tour de Fresh, a charity bike ride that has placed more than 150 salad bars in schools across the country since 2014, the salad bar mission has seen a great deal of success over the past 8 years.

As of this writing, Let’s Move Salad Bars to Schools has “moved” more than 4,800 salad bars to US schools, or right around 80% of the 6,000 salad bars goal.  Quite like you, our industry members don’t give up even in the face of extremely trying circumstances (fortunately for all fruit and veggie lovers worldwide), and we remain committed to increasing access to our nutritious and delicious products.

We will gladly assume this mantle, but are hopeful that you will continue to champion this cause, as well – because, let’s face it, we make a great team.  So, inquiring minds/fervent supporters want to know… What will happen to the Let’s Move campaign that you initiated? Will the Partnership for a Healthier America continue?  Will we keep striving for our common goal of at least 6,000 salad bar donations?

We hope to hear from you soon.  In the meantime, we’ll keep on moving.

Sincerely,

Brock (proud member of the fresh produce industry)
