8 Ways to Improve Your Business Cards

8 Ways to Improve your Business CardsIn the business world, an impactful first impression can be made (or not) with a firm handshake and a business card. So, an outdated or inferior card can hinder the opportunity to make a positive first impression. In the past, business cards were extremely limited due to technology and partially due to the slow advancement of design. However, today, business cards can be printed quickly and affordably. They can be used as a tool to help make or break a sale, showcase your company’s creativity, and let’s face it, help you schedule a Friday night date with the girl/guy you just met on Monday. They are your first impression, your mission statement, and a close representation of your identity.

It’s time to really analyze the 3.5″ x 2″ card you’re handing out. (If you’re reaching into your wallet right now to reassess yours, surely the thought has crossed your mind and it might be time for a makeover.)

As a creative-centric company, we are constantly asked to redesign business cards for our clients. A fresh, newly designed business card is the breath of fresh air a company needs to gain ground, to seal deals, to gain confidence and to “upgrade their handshakes”.

Here are 8 ways YOU can upgrade your handshake.

1. Die cut or go home.Creative Business Card Designs

A “die cut” is a technique used to cut a piece of cardboard, paper, or other material into a special shape or design using a sharp steel die (embossing plate). Die cut cards may come at an additional cost but can amp up your design in an instant.

2. Printing Techniques Abound!

As efficient as your Hewlett Packard Ink Jet printer is, it’s not the ideal way to print your business cards. There are so Letterpress Business Cardmany printing effects from which your business cards can benefit. For example, my personal favorite, LETTERPRESS can add some flare to your otherwise dull business cards. Letterpress, or relief printing, involves locking moveable type into the bed of a press, inking it, and rolling or pressing paper against it to form an impression. (Thanks Wikipedia!)

3. Personalize.personalized business cards

Your employees are unique and add individualism to your company, so why not allow your business cards to be just as special? Our DMA/The Core branded business cards do just that. We each got to select a color scheme for our card that evokes the essence of each!

4. Change Sizes.

Standard business cards are 3.5″ x 2″, but you don’t have to be “standard”. Most printers are capable of creating custom business cards, but keep in mind this custom cut might cost you extra.

5. Keep it Simple.

Quit trying to use every inch of real estate on your business cards. Only include the necessary information. Allow white space and room for your copy to breathe. It will make the design stronger and your company’s message clearer.Make a vertical business card!

6. Change Stock.

We recommend something a little more durable so that your cards don’t bend and fold easily – think the opposite of a limp handshake. Give it some backbone. Also, try requesting free or inexpensive sample books from potential printers. Getting creative with your stock is more affordable than ever, so take advantage and know your options.

7. Give it that little somethin’ extra.

We’ve seen it all. Business cards with bottle openers on them, some that look like movie tickets, ones that fold up into little characters, even see-through plastic business cards. The possibilities are endless when it comes to creativity. The ultimate goal here is to give people a card that they CAN’T and WON’T throw away.

8. Promotion Cards?Make a promotion card!

This piece of marketing collateral needn’t be limited to just contact info. With many economical printing options available, you can use this medium to push a promo or specific company message – or even have “seasonal” cards that push your peak-of-season products with every introduction. Take full advantage of the seven square inches of real estate by making it interactive with the addition of a QR code.

Get creative and make your business cards stand out from the others. It’s no longer just about ink on paper. These cards are a direct reflection of your business and brand, so give them extra attention in order to get the same in return.
