How to Build a Better Pinterest Board

APinterest is a wonderful place—a place full of decadent dishes and motivational messages and dazzling décor. But at the end of the day, there is a crucial step regarding this powerful social platform that businesses must always remember:

Pin with purpose.

What do I mean by that? I mean that behind every photo you pin (self-created or not), you must do so with the intention to express the personality or core message of your brand. In fact, one of our favorite food bloggers and social media gurus, Coryanne Ettiene, says you can think of your Pinterest account like a magazine. Just like it wouldn’t make sense for Better Homes & Gardens to have an edition dedicated to chainsaws & fishing, it wouldn’t make sense for a brand that sells conveniently pre-cut produce to have a board on “low and slow meals”. What would make sense for that brand, however, would be a board for “weeknight meals” or “on the go snacks.” Make sense?

To improve your Pinterest boards and give them an instant makeover, follow five easy steps:

  1. Make sure all of your existing boards have a minimum of 50 pins—if you can’t find enough content to hit that number, then that tells you to rethink that board.
  2. Delete those lingering boards with only a handful of pins—it makes your account look unprofessional.
  3. Delete boards that are not relevant to your brand messaging—think about your “magazine!”
  4. Make sure the cover photos of your boards are pristine and beautiful—consumers eat (and judge) with their eyes.
  5. For any given board, make sure no more than 30% is branded content—consumers are on Pinterest to feel inspired, not sold to.

Once you finish this quick cleanup, you can move towards better practices that include more purposeful content. Tailoring your Pinterest content to match your brand’s personality will make your audience feel like they benefit from following you, which will in turn help position you as a valuable source of inspiration.
