TCBY was once the king of the (quite limited) frozen yogurt castle. But, since the healthy lifestyle tide began rising, the artificial flavor and sugar-filled variety has been replaced by a new, nutritional kid on the block. It all started with Pinkberry, the little yogurt shop in West Hollywood, CA, that quickly became a SoCal sensation. And then spread. And now you see them everywhere, nationwide. And, Pinkberry is no longer the only game in town. Frozen yogurt shops like Yumilicious, Orange Cup and Red Mango (just to name a very few) are like the Starbucks of the early 2000’s – with multiple creamy, delicious options, often times within mere feet of each other.
Why the frozen explosion?? Well, as a huge fan myself, I’d say the primary reason for frozen yogurt’s near world domination is that it’s SO DARN GOOD. But, the health nut in me also appreciates that the foundation these sweet, satisfying treats are built on is nutritious – full of immune and digestive system-aiding probiotics, protein and calcium and free of fat, artificial sweeteners and, in some cases, gluten.
The foundation, however great it is, ISN’T what all the buzz is about. Customers become frequent repeaters because of…… the TOPPINGS. When it comes to decking out your yogurt creation, you can be good or you can be bad – the choice is yours. How healthy do you want to be?? Sure, there are chocolate chips, toffee bits and even Fruity Pebbles tempting you from the other side of the glass. But, I recommend (on both a personal taste and professional responsibility level) the FRESH FRUIT TOPPINGS. An array of berries, tropical and citrus fruits, along with chopped nuts and, at some locations, pure honey will beautifully and tastefully top your treat. You’ll walk out with your sweet tooth satisfied and be practically guilt-free!
