An Eagle, a Hokie and an Aggie Walk into a Niche Marketing Agency…

DMA Interns

… and made me realize, once again, how absolutely bright the future is for the fresh produce industry!

Interns have been a mainstay at DMA for the last 6 years, but this is the first summer we have brought on not one, not two, but three fabulous students to join us as we work to increase the consumption of fresh produce. I couldn’t be more floored by how lucky we are to have this crop of talent working here for the summer!

As a niche marketing agency, there are only so many full time positions available at our company for the coming years. Interns, however, are another story, which is why I approved the most aggressive summer internship program we have ever had for 2013. I thought why not share our office with any number of people for two months if it means that we increase the likelihood of having more talented people choose fresh produce as a career destination? Admittedly, I wondered if we would be able to maintain our track record of hiring excellent individuals if we expanded our program. Low and behold, we attracted and hired three incredibly talented, driven individuals who chose DMA and the fresh produce industry for the summer.

To welcome them to Dallas, I invited our new interns to dinner on Memorial Day before their first day at the office. What may surprise many of you is that I had only met one of the three prior to having them over. In fact, only one is from my alma mater, and no I did not meet her at the Dixie Chicken, but through the PMA Foundation Pack Family Career Pathways program at last years’ Fresh Summit.

When they were not singing karaoke (part of DMA orientation), our conversation focused on their “stories” and aspirations relative to their careers and their journey to DMA. Needless to say, these good-hearted and hard-working students will make our company, as well as our industry, stronger during their time here, and ultimately help us realize our vision for increasing consumption of fresh produce. “I’ve always been a talkative and curious person, so it was only a matter of time before I developed an interest for marketing and advertising. Plus, I love food—particularly fresh food. So finding an internship that allows me to market what I love? Perfect! While this is only my first internship experience, I know everything we’ll do at DMA Solutions will be something to be proud of.”
