I’m familiar with the phrase “too big to fail” from 2008 when my 401K proved to be anything but. But seriously, I was recently reminded of this phrase when I overheard Kelly, Mackenzie and Molly talking about their difficulties in finding an official Apple Facebook page and Twitter account. (Molly wanted to share her Valentine’s Day love note with them.)
Now I’m not debating whether or not the iPhone folks are too big to fail financially – I’ll leave that for the pages of The Wall Street Journal. But, I am wondering this: Does Apple think that they’re too big to market? Generally, I say “of course not”. I see their flashy, skyscraping billboards on the regular. But specifically regarding social media marketing, where are they?
Visit their website and there are no signs of social icons on the homepage. Yikes! Maybe they’ve segmented their social presence into product specific sites? It seems that’s only the case with iTunes. Search for “Apple” via the handy dandy new Facebook graph search and you can find “fan sites” with multiple millions of likes, but nothing from the Mac-creators themselves. Same goes for Twitter. There are many unofficial accounts and countless people conversing about all things “Apple”, but no official response or engagement from the company.
I have no doubt that there is a reason for their absence. But I also am certain that, based on all the buzz around the company and their products, an umbrella social presence or accounts for the other members of their product suite beyond iTunes would attract large and engaged communities. Quickly. We strongly believe that successful companies are relevant by being accessible to their audiences/customers “where they are, when they are there, with what they need.” And while Apple’s brand awareness is humongous and their marketing savvy is obvious, aren’t they missing out on a huge part of that “where they are” piece of relevancy?
I asked my friend Google “why isn’t Apple on Facebook?” and didn’t get an answer within 4 results pages. So, I’m still perplexed… Do they think they’re too big to social media market? And why are they focusing all their social efforts on iTunes?
I’d love your take on Apple corporate’s lack of social media marketing. Does anyone have any insider information? We’ve written to Mr. Tim Cook before and we’ll do it again if we have to!
