Not sure if you’ve noticed, but we’re slightly Olympics-obsessed here in the DMA office. Between Michael Phelps becoming the most decorated Olympian of all time and the Team USA vs. Team USA All-American beach volleyball match, it seems the games have monopolized our water cooler conversations. And after days and days of marveling at the incredible athleticism of these all-stars, I’ve experienced an intense re-focusing on my own fitness goals.
I regularly enjoy green smoothies for both their taste and nutrients, but since I started working up a sweat at a fitness boot camp each morning, I often don’t have time to blend one up at home. So, in honor of the London 2012 games AND my harried and hectic morning schedule, we’re featuring the ultimate body fueling beverage – the green protein smoothie – in this week’s Office Eats!
The Ingredients
- 1 banana, frozen and chopped
- 4 fresh strawberries, chopped
- 1 handful of fresh blueberries
- Fresh organic celery tops, chopped
- 1 Handful of Glory Foods Kale Greens
- A spoonful of Kettle Brand Almond Butter
- 1 Tablespoon of Superbee Pure Australian Honey
- 2 scoops of Biochem Sports Vanilla Whey Protein Powder
- A splash of O Organics Lowfat Milk (or any kind of milk you prefer! I love to use Silk PureAlmond milk.)
- A squirt of Pompeii 100% Lemon Juice
- 1 big scoop of ice
- About 2 ½ cups of water
The Equipment:
- Breville Hemisphere Control Blender
- 1 or more paring knives
- 1 big glass or cup
The Process & Prep Time:
- Thoroughly wash and prep your fruits and veggies.
- Place all ingredients together in blender and blend until smooth! It’s that easy!
- Add more water to create a thinner consistency. For this smoothie, about 2 and a half cups of water did the trick!
Green smoothies may not look like your cup of tea (or fruit), but give them a try and you’ll be pleasantly surprised! I absolutely love them, especially after an intense workout. Easy to quickly throw together at work, the banana and berry flavors completely mask the taste of the bitter kale and the almond butter and honey add a bit of sweetness to help you gulp down this “super food in a glass.”
What’s great about smoothies is that they’re so easily customizable. Experiment and add in your own favorite fruits/ingredients to create a flavor that is uniquely “you.” Sometimes I add in a couple spoonfuls of plain Greek yogurt for an extra protein kick to keep me full and energized during the work day. Either way, the blender is your blank canvas when it comes to creating body fuel that Lolo Jones & Company would deem “gold-medal worthy!”
