How do YOU Fascinate? Lessons from Women’s Fresh Perspectives

14-Main_Post-AD_LessonsWFPC.jpgEver wonder what makes YOU fascinating? This year’s Women’s Fresh Perspectives Conference included an incredible line-up of speakers who inspired nearly 300 talented women in the fresh produce industry to understand their value. One of the most memorable speakers for us was Sally Hogshead, who opened the event with a powerful speech about the importance of utilizing our unique communication styles to fascinate others.

Building a personal brand doesn’t just benefit you – it also benefits the brand(s) you work with by positioning your unique communication style as an asset to that team. We need all different types of communicators to support a brand through writing, design, strategy, project management, and more. Personal branding, especially as marketers, allows us to sell and lead in ways that produce even better results for the brands we work with, so let’s start approaching our communication in that way!

Here’s what you need to know about the Archetype Test:

  1. We have 9 seconds to fascinate people, and in turn, get results. Imagine performing a sport or musical talent – when you get “in the zone” you’re able to excite and over-perform with your talent. The same goes for communicating.
  1. Sally’s Archetype report identifies your top 2 communication styles to create a unique communication archetype. What this means is that, when using your top 2 communication styles effectively, you’re able to fascinate others and produce results.
  1. Better is not better; different is better. Remember that we’re not going to get results by trying to be more of what we’re not, but rather more of who we are. Identifying your Archetype will help you discover how to use your strongest communication styles to your advantage when leading others, closing deals, and meeting new people!
  1. The chart below shows 49 unique Archetypes, which combine your primary (horizontal) and secondary (vertical) communication styles. Another way to see yourself is to identify your twin, which combines your secondary (horizontal) with your primary (vertical) communication styles. Each Archetype has 3 adjectives that best describe what makes you fascinating as a communicator.

So, how can you use this to develop your team? DMA has been using the Archetype test within our own agency to determine best internal teams for brainstorming and goal-setting by pairing people with complementary communication styles in order to think creatively and deliver big results. This test has been a wonderful recruiting tool, as well, to determine cultural fit by pairing applicants with the right teams. We’re also much more aware of avoiding “double trouble” which happens when you pair all of the same primary communication styles together. Putting the same types of communicators in a room can lead to chaos, drama, and unmovable mindsets, as seen on the Archetype chart above.
